The changing of seasons means changing wardrobes for the change in weather but for some it’s also a change of playgrounds. A shift from sea to snow and bringing out toys for winter playgrounds. The concept of snowboarding originated in the United States in the 60’s as an experiment, to ‘Surf on Snow”.
Before the snow season kicks off, Takuya “TAPPY” Yoshikawa is busy in his workshop, working on new snowboard concepts, drawing curves on uncut wood snow planks. Draw-Cut out-Test ride-Redraw, will be the routine while another pre-season routine is building up the body strength and stamina for long deep-snow hikes to the peaks to test the new designs. When ultimate weather and snow conditions align on THE DAY, Tappy will be ready to take the 4 hour snow shoe hike up to the peak, off load the board, u-turn and glide all the way down an untouched mountain side of fresh piled powder on his new handmade edgeless board. ABS sidewalls and metal edges, common on machine manufactured snowboards are the contact edge from board to snow surface. However the “EDGELESS” board is hand cut by jigsaw and sidewalls trimmed by grinder and notably has no metal edges. As imaginable, these boards are not suitable for ‘carving’ fast tight turns on groomed slopes as the metal edge is what controls the turns. The Edgeless instead is for ‘backcountry’ terrain, for deep creamy powder snow, where the absence of metal edges creates a light weight and soft flex float ride that allow the board to glide through and not sink into the deep powder. Manipulating the sole or bottom of the board, not the edges, is how to navigate the glide.
No wonder we don’t find Tappy carving on the piste anymore nor do we find a board with an "edge" … in his possession. These EDGELESS boards glide different, a sensational floaty feeling that is difficult to explain in words. He says the Edgeless ride may be the closest feeling to the original “Surfing on snow" concept.

エッジレスボードと言うオモチャ
オモチャの入れ替えをしながら、手入れをする行為は、衣替えと似ている。海から雪山へ、季節と共にシフトされていく….
シーズンインを目前に“TAPPY”は新たなラインをSNOW BLANKSに描き、デザインに勤しんでいる。コンディションの整うTHE DAYを狙うため、身体の調整（2~3時間以上のハイクアップはざらに行うため、シーズン前には長い散歩で足腰を鍛錬している）、仕事の段取りと余念が無い。自身によるテストドライブ、チェック、リデザイン、は、冬のルーティーンである。
そもそもスノーボードは1960’年代頃“雪山でサーフィンがしたい”という、横ノリの発想からアメリカより派生した遊び？との諸説がある。
シェイパーである“TAPPY”がスノーボードをデザインすることは、横ノリの延長線上にある、ひらめきによるものであり、先人達が追い求めてきた“雪山でサーフィンがしたい”を継承する者とも言えるのかもしれない。なぜなら、“TAPPY”はシェイパーだからだ。
サーフボードとスノーボードのデザインには似ている点が幾つかある。サーフボードで言うノーズロッカーはスノーボードで言う立ち上がり。テールロッカーはキック、コンケーブはソールの形状（フラット、キャンバー、コンベックス）etc….また、シェイパーが、サーフボードを削り出すモデル毎に、BLANKSを使い分ける様に、5種類の異なるSNOW BLANKS（芯材となるポプラ、バンブー、バルサ、カーボンなどが、硬さ、重たさ、柔らかさ、ソール形状毎に組まれている）をベースにモデルをデザインするなど、サーフボード作りと似ている。
大きな違いはアウトラインの弧が外に向いているのがサーフボードで、弧が内に入っているのがスノーボードである。
そして、最もの違いはハンドクラフトによるサーフボード作りと、工業製品によるスノーボードだ。
DEUS POWDER TOOLSは、工業製品化されるまでにSNOW BLANKSをカットし、テストドライブを繰り返す事によって生まれてきた。
ジグソーでカットし、サイドウォールをグラインダーで整える。雪面との接点である“ABSサイドウォール”“エッジ”は工業製品には付属するが、SNOW BLANKSには無い。圧雪バーンでの滑走には不向きで、ソールでの面乗りによるコントロールができるエキスパートしか扱え無い。バックカントリーのみで機能する、滑走できると言っていい代物だ。
POWDERでの“エッジ”の無いボードは、重さはもちろん、深雪での引っかかりも無く、フィーリングの柔らかさが、なんとも表現しにくいが、気持ちいい〜
それはまさに、“雪山でサーフィンがしたい”に最も近いのかもしれない。
